Evidence-Based
Treatment Approaches:

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)a form of cognitive behavioral therapy—is a first-line treatment for OCD that involves intentionally facing thoughts, situations, sensations or other obsessional fears while resisting compulsions and avoidance. Through repeated practice, clients learn that they can tolerate discomfort and uncertainty without relying on compulsions or avoidance to feel “safe.”

  • SUPPORTIVE PARENTING FOR ANXIOUS CHILDHOOD EMOTIONS (SPACE) caregiver/parent-
based treatment that reduces family accommodation of a child’s anxiety or OCD. Parents learn how to respond to anxiety-driven behaviors with support rather than reassurance or avoidance, helping children develop greater confidence and independence in facing uncomfortable feelings.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a treatment approach that helps people respond differently to difficult thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations rather than trying to eliminate or control them. ACT focuses on building psychological flexibility—the ability to make meaningful choices and take action based on your values, even when anxiety or uncertainty is present.

  • Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) is a specialized, treatment for OCD that focuses on the reasoning process that leads to obsessional doubt, helping clients recognize when OCD has shifted from observable evidence and lived experience into hypothetical possibilities. Treatment teaches clients to reduce obsessional doubt by relying on direct evidence in the here and now.
