“What If I Make the Wrong Choice?” How OCD Hijacks Decision-Making
For people with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), decision-making can feel overwhelming. A simple choice—what to wear, whether to send a text or which cereal to buy—can become an exhausting loop of doubt, anxiety, and overthinking.
OCD often hijacks decision-making by convincing you that you need complete certainty before moving forward. OCD will also use emotional reasoning to tell you that, if you’re feeling doubt, you must be making the wrong choice. Your brain may send messages like:
“What if I make the wrong choice?”
“What if this decision has serious consequences?”
“What if I regret this later?”
“What if I missed something important?”
In response, many people with OCD begin engaging in compulsions such as repeatedly analyzing options, researching, asking others for reassurance, replaying conversations, or trying to find the “perfect” answer. While these behaviors may temporarily reduce anxiety, they actually strengthen OCD over time by teaching your brain that uncertainty is something to fear.
The good news? OCD does not have to control your choices.
How to Stop OCD From Taking Over Decisions
Practice making “good enough” decisions. OCD often demands the perfect choice, but most decisions in life do not require 100% certainty. Practicing “good enough” decision-making helps retrain your brain to tolerate uncertainty.
Reduce reassurance-seeking. Constantly asking others, checking online, or mentally reviewing your decision keeps the OCD cycle going. Try noticing the urge for reassurance and practicing allowing the uncertainty to be present.
Use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy.
ERP is an evidence-based treatment for OCD that helps you face feared uncertainty while resisting compulsive behaviors. Over time, your brain learns that uncertainty is uncomfortable—but not dangerous.
OCD recovery is not about becoming someone who never doubts themselves. It is about learning that you can make decisions, experience uncertainty, and trust yourself without needing OCD to provide the answer.
